A 44-Year-Old Man’s Experience with Koso-bathing

About seven years ago, I tried Koso-bathing for the first time at a place called Yuyu-an in Kimitsu, Chiba. It has since closed, but for me, it became a kind of teacher in the world of Koso-bathing.

At the time, I didn’t even really know what Koso-bathing was. I just went because someone invited me.

This time, I’m writing not as the owner of OHESO, but simply as someone who loves Koso-bathing, sharing what I’ve actually experienced over the years.

What I’ve noticed from Koso-bathing

  • I get seriously hungry afterward
  • Sometimes I prefer Koso-bathing to a sauna when I’m tired
  • The difference I feel after forestry work
  • My thoughts on Koso-bathing and weight loss
  • One very bad experience with Koso-bathing while hungover
  • Why I still recommend Koso-bathing, especially to sauna lovers

Koso-bathing Makes Me Really Hungry

One of the things I notice most after Koso-bathing is just how hungry I get.

As soon as I get out, I want to eat something.

Once, I thought, “I just did something good for my body, so I should eat something healthy,” and searched for a vegetable-focused café.

But I ended up at a soba restaurant.

“I’ll just have zaru soba today.”

That wasn’t enough.

So I added a katsudon.

Perfect.

And then, after eating, I suddenly became incredibly sleepy.

Hungry. Sleepy.

When those signals come from my body, I’ve learned to just listen to them.

Sometimes I Prefer Koso-bathing to a Sauna

I love saunas too.

Sauna → cold plunge → relaxation.
That moment when you finally “totonou” is fantastic.

But when a sauna is crowded, I sometimes find myself thinking about everyone around me.

When should I go into the cold plunge?
How long should I stay?
Is someone waiting?

And then, when I finally get out, the relaxation area is full.

So I end up sitting on a little chair in the washing area with my eyes closed for five minutes.

When I’m already exhausted, it’s hard to truly relax like that.

Koso-bathing is much simpler.

You just lie down and let the fermented rice bran cover you.

That’s it.

You don’t have to worry about timing anything or trying to reach some special state.

You can just relax at your own pace.

For a tired, middle-aged guy who doesn’t want to make things complicated, it really fits.

After Forestry Work, I Really Feel the Difference

Recently, I’ve been doing forestry work.

After a hard day, I sometimes come home completely exhausted and get into a Koso-bath.

And honestly, I really feel the difference.

When I get out, my body can suddenly feel lighter, almost as if the fatigue has disappeared.

I think, “I could probably go for another round of work—or even go out and have some fun.”

I’m not exaggerating. That’s genuinely how it feels to me.

A lot of people work hard all week, sleep a lot on their day off, and still don’t feel recovered.

Sometimes you’re so tired that even sleeping well becomes difficult.

For me, taking a Koso-bath at the end of the week, or first thing on my day off, then eating and sleeping, works really well.

What About Weight Loss?

Let me be clear.

Koso-bathing doesn’t magically burn off body fat just because you took a bath.

When you sweat, your weight can temporarily drop because you’ve lost water.

I’ve actually measured it several times. The biggest drop I’ve seen was around 750 grams.

But I think the bigger point is what happens over time.

Eat properly.
Sweat properly.
Sleep properly.
Reduce stress where you can.

For me, those habits have gradually made a difference, and I’ve lost around 10 kg over five years.

There’s also something psychological about it.

After doing something good for my body, I naturally start thinking a little more about what I eat.

I still eat ramen. I still snack. I love ridged potato chips.

But sometimes, halfway through eating something, I think:

“Yeah… this probably isn’t great for me.”

And I stop.

Sometimes.

Even occasionally thinking about it seems better than finishing the whole bag every single time without giving it a second thought.

Maybe those little things add up.

Never Take a Koso-bath When You’re Seriously Hungover

I once tested this because I wanted to know whether the warning was really justified for our customers.

That’s the official reason.

Honestly, I was also secretly hoping for a miracle recovery.

I had been drinking, slept for about two hours, and woke up feeling absolutely terrible.

I thought there was no way I’d be able to do anything the next day.

So I got into the Koso-bath.

At first, it felt warm and comfortable.

About 30 seconds later, I suddenly felt extremely nauseous.

My body started shaking violently. I became dizzy, and things got seriously bad.

I somehow crawled my way to the shower, covered myself with water, drank some water, and spent a while trying to recover.

I honestly don’t even remember exactly how much time passed.

I was probably severely dehydrated.

It was genuinely scary.

So please take this seriously:

If you are badly hungover or still drunk, do NOT take a Koso-bath.

Do not think that sweating will make the alcohol leave your body faster.

That is not how it works.

If you’ve recovered enough later in the day to eat and drink normally, that’s a completely different situation. Personally, I find Koso-bathing very relaxing then, and I often sleep deeply afterward.

Why I Still Take Koso-baths

There are a few other things I personally notice.

Sometimes mouth ulcers or a stye seem to feel better, and small cuts that are already healing sometimes seem to heal faster after I take a Koso-bath.

These are simply my own experiences—not medical claims.

And after sweating, I also feel like that unmistakable “summer middle-aged guy” smell coming off me is definitely reduced.

Then there’s sleep.

After Koso-bathing, I naturally get sleepy.

Instead of thinking, “I don’t want to go to bed yet,” I can simply accept that my body is tired and go to sleep.

I still love saunas, especially that incredible moment when your brain seems to suddenly go whoosh and everything opens up.

But when I’m tired, I really appreciate Koso-bathing.

You don’t have to do anything.

You don’t have to think about anyone else.

You can just lie there.

Maybe that’s what I like most.

It’s almost like an “Adults’ Day-Off Club.”

So if you’re a guy who loves saunas, but you’ve never tried Koso-bathing, give it a shot.

Sweat. Eat. Sleep well.

Honestly, it’s pretty damn good.
